Science + Math = Fun and Relevant
CHALLENGE’Ä®
NASSMC coordinates and funds the efforts of dozens of state-based coalitions dedicated to promoting systemic educational reform. The coalitions seek structural and cultural change in the K-12 education subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

NASSMC knew they needed a ’Äútent-revitalization’Äù to re-engage their member coalitions and sought our assistance.

We used the 10th anniversary of their NASA Linking Leaders Program as a launchpad to re-position the organization and build enthusiasm for the future.

GOAL’Ä®’Ä®NASSMC’Äôs main goals included:
(1) re-asserting themselves as a key resource for the state coalitions,
(2) raising visibility of systemic education reform at the national level, and
(3) creating publicity for the coalitions' work and impact throughout the states.

OUR APPROACH’Ä®’Ä®We outlined and developed a three-pronged approach for strengthening NASSMC's story, message, and member relations. The plan included an outreach strategy and promotion campaign to better engage member coalitions. Interviews of key staff members and a comprehensive survey of the state coalition leadership offered valuable insight about leadership motivations, reform challenges, and policy successes. The information gathered helped to inform the re-branding of the NASSMC story and message.

RESULTS

Our work received accolades from NASSMC, NASA, and the coalition stakeholders. Our final deliverables included:

(1)	A 10th Anniversary NASA Linking Leaders storybook ’Äì showcasing the accomplishments of each state coalition and organized as an idea resource for supporting new coalition activities
(2)	Two days of story training workshops at the NASA Linking Leaders annual conference
(3)	A new NASSMC marketing press kit and brochure for general outreach

Based on NASA’Äôs renewed confidence in the Linking Leaders program, the program is slated to receive additional funding in the next federal budget.

WHAT THEY THOUGHT

"Your workshops were splendid! There was a measurable behavioral change among the participants. You also impressed attendees from the federal government. You added a lot to the conference and you made us look great! The 10th Anniversary Linking Leaders book is outstanding. We have many requests for more copies and to make it available online. NASA likes the book too, which was a major priority. In summary, you rock."

The Power of Marketing Energy when Coupled with Cold Fusion
CHALLENGE

TeraTech, Inc. is a ColdFusion programming company based in Rockville, Maryland. For the last seven years, the company has sponsored the ColdFusion Users National Conference (CFUN) as both an educational gathering and a business development opportunity. TeraTech engaged us to take the conference to the next level and make CFUN a profit center for the business.

GOAL

TeraTech sought to increase attendance at the conference, as well as develop long-term sponsorship ventures with key industry contacts. TeraTech also hoped to build buzz in the programming community about the CFUN Conference so as to raise the media profile of the event.

APPROACH

Our work began with an assessment of marketing materials from past conferences and in-depth conversations with the conference manager and the company president to identify marketing messages. We then suggested ideas and strategies for drawing revenue forward in the conference sales cycle, offering special promotions for attendees, and developing alternate learning tracks to address the varied interests of the attendees. We helped to design and manufacture a series of promotional items and show materials ’Äì developing key components of a comprehensive promotions strategy. In an effort to further legitimize the event’Äôs standing in the business community, the conference was renamed CFUNITED in 2005.

RESULTS

Our work resulted in increased attendance of 52% during our first year working together and a 75% increase the second year. Corporate sponsorship has also increased by 36% and overall revenue increases are estimated at more than $280,000. Our final deliverables included:

(1)	Conference Showguide ’Äì detailing the various presentations and offering sponsors an opportunity for a printed advertisement.
(2)	Conference CD ’Äì an electronic version of all materials available at the conference
(3)	Conference Bags ’Äì offering a ’Äúwalking promotion’Äù for the conference and the top-level sponsors
(4)	Logo Promotional Items ’Äì including t-shirts for attendees, hats for VIP attendees, scratchpads, and other promotional items.
